Conference at University College, Cork, Ireland
18 - 19 January 2008
We are currently in the process of organising a research project on the phenomenon of the literary boom femenino in Mexico. Taking 1980 as a general starting point for the boom, we define it primarily as the dramatic increase in publishing by women in Mexico. In the project, we are interested in exploring the texts produced during this period (1980 to present) by a wide range of women writers and the ways in which they have impacted on the Mexican and international cultural arena. Essays might take the form of examination of one particular writer; a comparison between two or more writers or consider questions of reception and cultural translation. Forms and genres will include poetry, narrative and chronicle/crónica among others. We would, however, ask that all contributors address the notion of the boom femenino in some form or other.
Please submit your proposal (max 150 words) by the 15th October 2007 to either Nuala.Finnegan[at]ucc.ie or to j.e.lavery[at]soton.ac.uk
As it is currently envisaged, the project has two strands: an edited volume of essays and a conference on the theme.
Scholars who have already agreed to contribute to the project have a serious record of publications in the area of Mexican writing by women. These include:
- Prof. Debra Castillo
- Dr. Emily Hind
- Prof. Luz Elena Gutiérrez de Velasco
- Dr. Teresa Hurley
- Prof. Beth Jörgensen
- Prof. Irma Lopez
- Prof. Claudia Schaefer
- Dr. Dawn Slack
- Dr. Claire Taylor
- Dr. Niamh Thornton
- Dr. Elena Urrutia
We have extended an invitation to writers Angeles Mastretta and Ana Clavel who have accepted to attend the conference.
